Common Exception Words
In Year 2 we follow the National Curriculum programme of study to inform our taught spelling patterns and rules each week. However some words are exceptions to these rules or may make sounds using letters that do not match the known grapheme-phoneme correspondence (sounds) taught in phonics. There are too many words to teach in their entirety but the following are an example of words that are exceptions to the taught rules that the children may use frequently in their work. We call these 'common exception words'.
