Newsletter Number 8   -   14 November 2025

Message From Mrs Dance

Dear parents and carers,

I hope that this week has been a positive one for you all. My week has flown by! Once again, the school has been a hive of activity with a tremendous amount of learning taking place.

This week, my assemblies have been focussed on the school value:  Open-mindedness “explore…there may be more!”

I linked our value to Remembrance day. We talked about how we, as a society and school community, can learn from the past. Paying tribute to our service community by being open to the views and opinions of others; remaining open-minded to each other and the world around us.

The Makaton sign for open-minded is:

This week, we welcomed lots of prospective new families to our school. It was a fabulous evening sharing what we offer at Vigo to our children and families.

You may have noticed some new additions to our playground provision. Mr. Dockree has been working with our Mid-Day Supervisors, to enhance the lunchtime provision across both KS1 and KS2 playgrounds. The children are loving the new additions, as are the lunchtime staff!

Miss Blake has trained our new Junior Road Safety Officers (JRSO) this week. They are brimming with exciting ideas; the first two ideas are to develop a school JRSO display and to launch a road safety competition across the school. I look forward to introducing the team to you in next week’s newsletter and working with them this academic year.

I wanted to share with you some lovely feedback I received recently. While Year 6 were at Calshot for their residential trip last week Cllr Kirsty North, who was filling at the centre at the time, contacted me to commend our Vigo pupils. She said:

"the pupils were an absolute credit to your school. They were confident, engaging, honest and friendly as they talked to me about their stay this week. It was brilliant to watch all the pupils getting stuck into archery, skiing, cycling and climbing and hearing about some of the challenges a residential stay brings – getting some sleep, for example!"

Finally, on Monday, we held our second Parent Forum meeting for this academic year. The minutes and highlights document will be shared with you next week. Thank you to everyone who shared their views and suggestions with the reps; by working together our children will thrive and succeed.

Wishing you all a great weekend

Yours faithfully

Mrs Dance

Headteacher

Attendance this week

Please think carefully before keeping your child away from school.

As parents and carers, you have a responsibility to inform the school before 9.00am every day if your child will not be in school, this can be done via the Arbor app, by emailing the attendance email address: attendance@vigo.hants.sch.uk or by calling the school and selecting option 1.

More about attendance at Vigo >>

Lateness

Please ensure your child is at school at 8:35am ready for the school day.

You may be invited into school for a meeting with our Attendance Support Worker if lateness is persistent.

Unfortunately, due to updated government guidelines, non-attendance of this meeting could result in a penalty notice or referral to the Legal Intervention Team.

Quote of the Week

“I think probably kindness is my number one attribute in a human being. I’ll put it before any of the things like courage, or bravery, or generosity, or anything else… Kindness—that simple word.

To be kind—it covers everything, to my mind. If you’re kind that’s it.”

First Aid and Medical Tracker

Medical Tracker is now being used across school for recording all First Aid incidents and accidents.

The feedback we had from the parent forum was very positive. Thank you to everyone who passed on those messages.

If you feel an incident may require further discussion, please talk to the class teacher at the end of the day.  Teachers are able to log into the Medical Tracker system and look into an incident in more detail if needed.

NUTS!

We currently have several children with nut allergies in school, so it is important that children DO NOT bring any food items into school which may contain nuts.

Could all parents and carers please ensure that NO NUTS are sent to school. This includes chocolate spread, and cereal bars. We appreciate that not all chocolate spread contains nuts, however the vast majority do. It is not possible for our staff to tell the difference between types of chocolate spread once they are put into a sandwich, so in order to protect our children we have to ask that no chocolate spread is sent into school at all.

Any items containing nuts or chocolate spread will be removed from the child’s lunch or snack and returned to you at the end of the day. If this is a sandwich an alternative will be provided such as bread and butter or toast.

St. Nicholas’ Day. 6th December 2025

Do you and your family celebrate St. Nicholas’ Day?

Would you like to come into school and share what your children do on this day? We are looking for parents and grandparents to visit the children in their classes to tell them the story and traditions of celebrating St. Nicholas’ Day. This would be during the morning of Friday 6th December 2025.

If you are available and would like to share your cultural traditions, please contact Mrs Neale (EAL Manager) through the school office.

Our Head girl Lily features on this article for Hampshire County council! Councillor Kirsty North caught up with Lily, Harley, Cameron and Krisztian, our Deputy and Head boys and girls during their recent trip to Calshot. Councillor North sent a very complimentary email to the school stating "I wanted to share a thank you note to Mrs Dance but mainly to Cameron, Lily, Krisztian and Harley from the Yr6 residential trip at Calshot this week. I was visiting the Activities Centre to take part in some activities and film for a social media clip on behalf of Hampshire County Council and the pupils were an absolute credit to your school. They were confident, engaging, honest and friendly as they talked to me about their stay this week. It was brilliant to watch all the pupils getting stuck into archery, skiing, cycling and climbing and hearing about some of the challenges a residential stay brings - getting some sleep, for example!I was really proud to meet them all. As the local county councillor, it would be great to get some time in the diary to come to the school for a visit and hopefully see some friendly faces."
